You can easily make cheese-flavored cat treats at home using just a few simple ingredients. Here’s a basic recipe that your cats are sure to love:
Ingredients:
- 1 cup rolled oats (gluten-free if needed)
- 1 cup grated cheddar cheese (make sure it’s cheese made for human consumption, not pet-specific cheese)
- 1 large egg, beaten
- 1/4 cup plain Greek yogurt
Instructions:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a food processor, blend the rolled oats until they form a fine flour.
- In a mixing bowl, combine the oat flour, grated cheese, beaten egg, and Greek yogurt. Mix well until you have a dough that holds together.
- Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface, and roll it out to about 1/2 inch thickness.
- Using cookie cutters or a sharp knife, cut the dough into small shapes (be creative, but keep in mind that cats may prefer simpler shapes).
- Place the treats on the prepared baking sheet, leaving some space between them as they will expand slightly while baking.
- Bake for about 20-25 minutes, or until the treats are golden brown and crispy.
- Allow the treats to cool completely before serving to your cats. Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.
Remember that these treats are intended to be occasional snacks and should not make up more than 10% of your cat’s daily calories. Always monitor your cat for signs of overindulgence such as excessive weight gain or changes in behavior.
